For many years I have been interested in art… the regular kind. I always loved pop art in particular and the colourful work of the sixties and seventies. But once I had seen most of it I realised that it was static, not changing. Yes, there is obviously LOTS of art to look at and you can choose to look at different pieces, but a painting is a painting and remains so… it doesn’t live.
Then I noticed street art and graffiti and my whole idea of art changed. It was alive and exciting. Every day the streets would change… a different train would come in… it was exciting and real. I was hooked!
I lived in Bristol, England for some years and there is a wonderful graffiti and street art culture there. If ever you have the chance you must visit and see some of the Banksy pieces… they are all out there on the streets – the best art gallery that there is!
Now I live in Paris, France and once again I am living amongst some wonderful art. It is different to England but there is some wonderful stuff going on. And it is not restricted to walls and trains – if you park a white van in Paris for a short time you may well come back to find it completely covered! I love it.
But, one of the downsides of graffiti is the amount of bad work which is around. It gives the whole scene a bad name and makes the town hall get their own paint out and cover it up. So, I decided that it was about time to get you all to learn graffiti properly. Joanna x
